Key Features

Platform Lift – Highlights

Every Bruno vertical platform lift is built with essential engineering features that prioritize user confidence, smooth motion, and continuous protection in any outdoor or indoor environment.

Bruno residential platform lift low-threshold folding entry ramp

Low-Threshold Entry

A gently sloping folding ramp provides an easy roll-on threshold for scooters, wheelchairs, and walkers. As the lift begins to rise, the ramp automatically folds upward into a rigid safety barrier.

Bruno all-weather vertical platform lift tower and deck installation

All-Weather Durability

Engineered with marine-grade electrical enclosures, weather-resistant coatings, and durable materials that withstand wet West Coast winters, heavy rain, and direct sun year after year.

Bruno vertical platform lift sensitive bottom obstruction safety sensor pan

Integrated Safety Sensor

A sensitive bottom obstruction sensor pan under the entire platform detects objects, pets, or debris in the downward path and halts travel instantly to prevent pinch or crushing hazards.

Compact footprint Bruno platform lift installed alongside residential exterior deck steps

Space-Saving Design

Occupies a compact vertical footprint compared to long ramp switchbacks, leaving your walkway, driveway, and landscaping unobstructed while delivering effortless porch access.

Customization

Platform Lift – Options

Tailor your vertical platform lift to your specific mobility equipment and household needs. Bruno offers dedicated gates, automated door operators, and landing stations to make everyday use effortless.

Bruno platform lift top landing gate installed on a porch deck

Landing Gate

A code-compliant top landing gate prevents falls when the platform is at the lower level. It unlocks only when the lift reaches the top landing securely.

Bruno platform lift landing call/send station wall control

Landing Call/Send Station

Weather-protected exterior key or push-button stations allow riders or family members to call the lift to their landing level from above or below.

Bruno platform lift with platform-mounted safety gate

Platform Gate

An optional gate mounted directly on the lift platform provides an additional barrier and physical sense of enclosure as the platform travels.

Bruno automatic power platform gate operator mechanism

Platform Gate Operator

Automates opening and closing of the platform-mounted gate so users can enter or exit without having to reach or manually push the gate.

Bruno power assisted gate operator for vertical wheelchair lifts

Power Assisted Operator

Motorized gate assist provides hands-free accessibility for riders with limited grip strength or upper-body mobility, opening smoothly upon arrival.

Everyday Operation

How a platform lift works

Operating a Bruno platform lift is straightforward and intuitive. Functioning like a dedicated personal vertical elevator, it safely moves riders and heavy mobility devices from ground level to porch or deck height.

01

Roll on at ground level

The low-threshold approach ramp rests flat on the ground pad. The user rolls directly onto the spacious non-skid platform in a wheelchair, powerchair, or mobility scooter.

Accommodates powerchairs up to 750 lb (340 kg).
02

Smooth push-button travel

As the lift begins to rise, the entry ramp automatically folds upward to create a rigid safety barrier. With constant-pressure control, the lift glides smoothly and quietly up the tower track.

Optional platform gate provides added enclosure security.
03

Exit safely at the top landing

Once the platform reaches the top landing level, the top landing gate safely unlocks. The rider pushes open the gate (or uses an automated power operator) and rolls onto the deck or porch. To travel back down, simply reverse the process.

Top landing gate remains locked until the platform is in position.
Built-In Protection

Safety features to expect

Ensure that any vertical platform lift you install in your home includes essential, code-mandated safety features designed to prevent falls, roll-offs, and pinch hazards.

Barrier that folds up

When a user rolls onto the Bruno platform lift and presses the button to engage vertical travel, the access ramp automatically folds upward. This forms a rigid safety barrier preventing the mobility device from rolling backward during ascent.

Optional platform gate provides an extra layer of protection.

Top landing gate

At the upper deck or porch landing, a dedicated safety gate or door prevents anyone from stepping or falling off the edge when the platform lift is resting at the lower level. It mechanically and electrically interlocks so it cannot open until the lift is safely docked.

Interlocked to prevent upper landing fall risks.

Obstruction safety sensors

An obstruction safety sensor pan located under the underside of the platform gently halts travel if it encounters any object, child's toy, or pet. This is vital to eliminate crushing hazards beneath the platform as it descends.

Stops movement immediately if resistance is met.
Site Requirements

Installation and site preparation

Although a residential vertical platform lift (VPL) is a freestanding piece of equipment, site preparation may be needed before the installation process can begin. Home2stay coordinates all site details so your installation runs smoothly and safely.

Home2stay Professional Coordination

We handle site measurements, pad specifications, and permit requirements across Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, and all Metro regions.

1

Concrete pad

A platform lift must rest on a stable concrete foundation. A concrete pad of proper depth and dimensions may need to be poured prior to lift anchoring.

2

Approach path

A smooth, level walkway or sidewalk leading up to the lower landing pad may need to be added or adjusted to provide an appropriate barrier-free approach path for mobility scooters or powerchairs.

3

Nearby electricity

A dedicated electrical power supply must be available nearby to either power the lift directly (AC) or feed the continuous battery charger (DC). All electrical work is completed by licensed Red Seal tradespeople.

4

Hoistway only for basement or second-storey travel

Most outdoor porch lift site preparation is minor and open. However, if a vertical wheelchair lift is being used indoors to travel between floor levels (such as a basement or upper floor), building code requires it to travel within an enclosed architectural hoistway or shaftway.

Power Systems

AC or battery power

There are two ways in which a Bruno vertical platform lift can be powered: standard household current (AC) or battery power (DC). We help you choose the best system based on your home and climate needs.

Household Current (AC)

The most common method of providing power to a home platform lift (porch lift) is plugging into a standard household outlet via an exterior code-compliant connection.

  • No batteries to maintain or replace in the future
  • Lower total long-term maintenance requirements
  • Consistent performance plugged into regular residential power
Best suited when power supply is constant and battery maintenance is avoided.

Battery Power (DC)

Battery-powered platform lifts are considered a safer and more reliable solution since the lift continues to operate smoothly even during unexpected municipal electrical outages.

  • Operates even if household or neighborhood power is disrupted
  • Under normal use, batteries last for several days during a blackout
  • Batteries generally last several years under regular home care
Provides peace of mind for seniors requiring uninterrupted egress in any weather.
Comparison Guide

Platform lift vs ramp

When evaluating entryway accessibility for mobility devices, homeowners often weigh wheelchair ramps against vertical platform lifts. Here is how code requirements, space limits, and costs compare.

The 1:12 Code Rule

Access Ramps: Long Runways

By code, ramps require approximately 1 foot of ramp length for every 1 inch of vertical rise (1:12 slope). For example:

12″ (1 ft) Rise = 12-ft Ramp Length
Manageable for low single-step thresholds.
24″ (2 ft) Rise = 24-ft Ramp Length
Often requires rest landings, turns, or switchbacks.
36″+ (Porch Height) = 36-ft+ Ramp System
Can dominate the front yard, block walkways, and prove costly to build.

Long runway ramp systems can take up significant yard space, obscure exterior architecture, and require substantial physical effort for manual wheelchair pushers.

The Vertical Advantage

Bruno VPL: Space-Efficient & Cost-Effective

A vertical platform lift rises straight up in a compact footprint, eliminating sprawling ramp switchbacks while offering substantial advantages over full residential elevators:

  • Compact Footprint:Takes only a few square feet next to your porch stairs, keeping walkways and gardens clear.
  • More Cost-Efficient Than an Elevator:Significantly less structural disruption and cost than building a full through-floor residential elevator.
  • Clean Architectural Profile:Blends neatly alongside your home deck or entry landing with high curb appeal.
  • Effortless Vertical Transit:750 lb capacity effortlessly carries heavy powerchairs without physical incline pushing.
