Where to Place Grab Bars and Handrails

Placement matters as much as the bar itself. A bar in the wrong place is harder to use and can give a false sense of safety.
In the bathroom
- Outside the tub or shower, so you have something to hold as you step in or out.
- Inside the shower, on the wall you face when you stand and on the side wall for balance.
- Beside the toilet, to help you sit and stand.
- At a height and angle that suit you. People differ, so mark the position with the user standing or sitting where they will use it.
On the stairs
- A handrail on both sides where possible.
- A rail that is continuous from the top step to the bottom and slightly beyond each end.
- A shape you can wrap your hand around.
Hallways and entries
A wall-mounted rail in a hallway gives support between rooms. A rail or pole near the front door helps with a step or a threshold.
Mounting matters
Every bar and rail should be anchored into wall studs or proper blocking, and rated for the weight it may carry. We mount into the structure so the bar holds when you need it most.
